FY24 Asset Renewals - Kaili Level Crossing & Formation Renewal

Project Description
Aurizon engaged Sterling to complete removal and replacement of the Kaili level crossing and formation near Bowen.
While the renewal works were being undertaken, an alternate temporary crossing on the Bruce Highway was constructed to main road specifications off the major highway network.
Sterling engaged with multiple stakeholders, which consisted of Whitsunday Regional Council, Port Authorities, DTMR, Bowen Rail Company, Queensland Rail and Aurizon, to ensure safe and effective working practices.
The works completed by Sterling and its subcontractors included:

The project was completed on time and under budget allowing train and car traffic to resume normal running conditions through the level crossing.

TEYS Rail Siding & Bridge Pier Replacement

Project Description
TEYS Australia engaged Sterling to complete the removal and replacement of 300No. timber sleepers along the cattle delivery rail siding and the removal and replacement of a timber pier under the cattle bridge rail overpass at the Rockhampton factory yard.
This project involved undertaking the works in stages to ensure cattle deliveries to the factory were not affected and to ensure any works undertaken were certified in time for the next train delivery.
The works completed by Sterling and its subcontractors included:

Service location, survey set out and removal and replacement of a timber pier

Removal and replacement of (300) timber sleepers

Re alignment of the track gauge

Managing track certification
The project has since been completed safely without incident and to the satisfaction of all stakeholders.
FY24 Structures Renewal Package D

Project Description
Aurizon engaged Sterling to complete seven culvert renewals, a grout fill elimination and a Rail Turnout across the Blackwater System on both the North Coast and Central Lines as part of FY24 Structures Renewal Package.
This was a very resource heavy closure that required significant planning and management to mitigate the technical and safety risks involved with the nearby construction traffic, electrical overheads (Ergon and Aurizon), wet weather and multiple worksite groups with shared plant/machinery/resources.
The works completed by Sterling and its subcontractors included:

Removal of track, formation and existing culvert units

Excavation of existing subgrade and installation of new foundation material

Installation of pre-cast unit base slabs and crown units and pouring of base slab stitch pours

Backfill of stabilised sand to culvert sides

Installation of formation, ballast and reinstatement of track
The project was completed safely without incident and to the satisfaction of all stakeholders.
Aurizon Structures Renewal

Project Description
Aurizon engaged Sterling to complete its first culvert renewal, grout fill elimination and rail infrastructure works predominately across the Blackwater System on both the North Coast and Central Lines.
Sterling has successfully and safely completed 11 years and over $30m of structure renewal work for Aurizon and has developed and trained a highly experienced civil and culvert installation specialist team of tradesmen and machine operators.
These structure renewal works are very resource heavy and required significant planning and management to mitigate the technical and safety risks involved to ensure the works are completed safely and within the shutdown time frames to ensure the rail line is open to the coal traffic.
