Careers at Sterling

Sterling Graduate Program

Build and grow your engineering expertise and expand your career options with the Sterling Graduate Program. With billions of dollars of investment in the rail sector forecast over the next ten years, there has never been a better time to join the industry.

The Sterling Graduate Program runs for two years. Graduates are allocated to a service line for approximately three months, before embarking on their next rotation. Each graduate is assigned a mentor who will support and guide them throughout the duration of the entire program.

The Sterling Graduate Program offers engineering graduates the opportunity to obtain hands-on experience across a range of activities including inspections; civil engineering and construction; load rating and design; universal access; pipes certification; data management; project management; and third party and rail access with ActivateRail. We believe exposure to these activities provides rounded and practical engineers.

We offer wide-ranging experience, allowing graduates to gain insights into a broad range of career paths and to identify areas where they can excel.

“The Sterling Graduate program gave me the breadth of experience a larger company would provide but with the individual attention and guidance of a family business. Rotating through the various business units has enabled me to confidently engage with clients and manage my own projects end-to-end. Because Sterling is a one-stop shop for many of our clients, I understand their needs beyond the scope of the project, and I can confidently offer solutions outside the box.” — Sterling Graduate

Internships at Sterling

Throughout the year, we offer opportunities to engineering undergraduates based in Victoria and Queensland for industry placement prior to completing their degree. We have relationships with leading universities and other higher learning institutions, including Monash University, RMIT, Swinburne and Central Queensland University.

These placements allow students to gain work integrated learning experience for a duration of one to four months (part or full time) which may be a pre-requisite for course completion or simply provide practical and industry-focused experience to complement the course. The internship provides students with hands-on, real life experience in the management of civil, structural and project engineering challenges.

All internships are guided and supervised by senior engineers who ensure students are provided with the tools and support to complete their assigned work. The nature of the placement will depend on work requirements but will include some or all of the following activities: desktop studies; calculations; report writing; data management; and site work in the form of structure inspections or construction site supervision. In all cases, a student will have opportunities to interact with the Sterling team at all levels of seniority.

If you wish to be placed on our internship waiting list, please register your interest by sending your current CV and a cover letter to hr@sterling.com.au. Please note only shortlisted candidates will be contacted.

“Coming through the Sterling experience from an intern to a structural engineer has been an extremely rewarding, nurturing and value-based experience. The unique opportunity that Sterling provides is the significant breadth of exposure so early in your career. I’ve been fortunate enough to see projects from tender, inception, through to bricks and mortar delivery, and being able to put my hand on the product. The opportunities to become a job manager for sizable contracts and act as direct client correspondent have been career defining. It’s an opportunity unlikely to have been presented by other organisations.” — Sterling Intern
