Raphael Woon

Technical Director

Raph joined Sterling in July of 2021 as a Principal Bridge Engineer and Technical Director of Sterling. With a +30-year career spanning the design, construction and maintenance of bridges and heavy civil structures, he is responsible for providing technical mentorship and guidance to the Sterling Design and Inspection teams and stimulating the intellectual curiosity of our professional engineers and enhancing the culture of technical excellence within the engineering group.

He has developed a high level of skill in visual and engineering inspection, load rating assessments and the design of structures through his professional experiences in both the public and private sectors. His design experience includes the design of road and rail bridges in timber, steel, reinforced concrete and both prestressed and post tensioned concrete structures. Raph has held a variety of roles that ranged from being Bridge Asset Manager in the South-West region of WA, managing three construction crews and preparing the maintenance works program for bridge assets, to a FEED Engineering Manager for the Civil package on an LNG project. As a Principal Bridge Engineer in the private sector, he has designed bridges and jetties for the mining and LNG industries.

An engineering graduate from the University of WA, Raph also holds an MBA from the Curtin University of Technology. As a former Chair of the Structures Panel of Engineers Australia in WA and a Fellow of the Engineers Australia, he is driven and dedicated to raising the profile of structural engineers by doing his part in delivering high quality outcomes. Raph is a Chartered Professional Engineer with NER registration and holds RPEQ accreditation.
