Technical Principal - Structures

In the role of Technical Principal and Design Manager, Mehdi brings unparalleled expertise in bridge design and assessment to Sterling. With a career spanning over 17 years in civil and structural engineering, he has successfully overseen and led numerous projects involving the design and assessment of new/existing structures for both rail and road applications. His proficiency extends across various aspects, including composite decks, concrete battle decks, steel trough decks, box/pipe culverts, retaining walls, and crash protection beams. Moreover, he has experience in working on underground gas main and water main pipes and has even acted as a 3rd party approver for designs completed by others.

Since joining Sterling in 2016, Mehdi has been pivotal in conducting extensive load ratings for complex bridges, encompassing diverse structures like steel, concrete, composite, masonry, and truss bridges, while also including fatigue assessment. When faced with the challenge of strengthening designs, Mehdi's technical prowess shines through as he skilfully proposes cost-effective and constructible solutions for remedial works. Particularly noteworthy is his success in developing strengthening designs for bridges with heritage significance, effectively incorporating design code compliance alongside heritage requirements.

Mehdi's expertise extends further to encompass various remedial design activities, such as CFRP strengthening design for concrete bridges with ASR-affected piers, steel superstructures, and masonry abutments/piers, as well as signal mast/overhead strengthening designs. When confronted with complex modelling demands, Mehdi adeptly demonstrates his proficiency in Finite Element (FE) analysis, employing tools like Abaqus and Stand7 to devise innovative and effective design solutions.
Academically, Mehdi's qualifications include a Bachelor's degree in civil engineering, a Master's degree in Earthquake Engineering, and a PhD in Structural Engineering. He is recognized as a Registered Professional Engineer (RPE), Registered Professional Engineers Queensland (RPEQ), and National Engineer Register (NER). Additionally, Mehdi holds the esteemed title of Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng), solidifying his expertise in the domain of bridge engineering.
In addition to the above, Mehdi holds Metro Train Melbourne (MTM) certifications for multiple roles, including designer, checker, approver, independent reviewer, external assessor, and Subject Matter Expert (SME).
