Sterling were appointed by ARTC to complete Visual and Engineering Inspections of specified structural assets along the Newport to Summerhill Rd line section.
One of the major structures along this line was the Maribyrnong River Viaduct, which was constructed circa 1928. The viaduct consists of 25 spans with an overall bridge length of approximately 384 metres. The bridge spans the Maribyrnong River Valley and carries two railway tracks of the Albion to Broadmeadows line.
The scope of work included a comprehensive engineering inspection by use of access equipment, and abseiling to record all the defects and closely examine structural members of the viaduct. It also included a full computer modelling of the viaduct in its As-New and As-Is conditions, as well as load rating of all structural members by taking into account all the applicable loadings.
Sterling have now delivered the inspection and modelling section of the viaduct and are working with ARTC on a comprehensive Health Monitoring programme tailored for this viaduct. Following the success in delivering the first stage of this project, Sterling was appointed to provide a strengthening solution based on the findings of the detailed inspection and modelling of the viaduct.
