Sterling was engaged by Aurizon to undertake a culvert renewal on the Central Line at chainage 170.600km, during a 108-hour scheduled Blackwater System track closure in Bluff, Queensland.
The original culvert was an 8-cell x 1200mm x 600mm x 28m system that was replaced by a 4-cell x 1200 x 1200mm x 29m pre-cast culvert system consisting of 18 x base slabs and 48 x culverts. This culvert is located in Bluff Yard and extends beneath five tracks that were required to be removed and reinstated during the closure. The project was run on a 24-hour roster throughout the duration of the 108-hour closure and required planning and managing a multitude of subcontractors to complete. Sterling completed the cast-in-situ aprons, headwalls and wingwalls as well as the handrail and flood rock protection post closure.
This project was deemed high-risk due to its location being in a high traffic rail yard. However, Sterling delivered this project safely without incident, on-time and to budget.
